Root Canal Treatment Cost in South Africa

Root canal treatment removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside a tooth, then cleans, fills and seals the canals to save the tooth. Front teeth have a single canal and cost less, while molars have multiple canals and take more time, so they cost more. Prices below are indicative SA ranges per tooth and vary by clinic and case complexity.

What affects the price

Does medical aid cover it?

Root canal treatment is generally recognised by SA medical schemes as a necessary restorative procedure and is often partly covered from the dental or savings benefit, sometimes with pre-authorisation. The follow-up crown is funded separately and may have its own limits — confirm cover and codes with your scheme.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a molar root canal cost more than a front tooth?

Molars have three or more root canals versus a single canal in most front teeth. Locating, cleaning and filling extra canals takes more time and skill, which raises the fee.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Often yes, especially for back teeth. A root-treated tooth becomes more brittle, and a crown protects it from fracturing. This is an additional cost on top of the root canal fee.

Is a specialist more expensive than my dentist?

Yes. An endodontist (root canal specialist) typically charges more than a general dentist but may be recommended for difficult cases such as molars with curved canals or re-treatments.

Are these prices guaranteed?

No. SA dental fees are unregulated and vary by clinic, tooth and complexity. Treat these as indicative ranges and get a written quote after an X-ray.
